Targaceutical® Technology: Using Innovation to Target Disease
In October 2003, Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, Inc., acquired most of the assets of Protarga, Inc., a clinical stage pharmaceutical development company that was based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Protarga pioneered the development of Targaceutical® technology. A Targaceutical® is a new class of drug products that contain a fatty acid (or other fatty vector) that is chemically linked to a pharmaceutical agent to increase drug delivery to the target tissue where it is needed.

Relative to the parent pharmaceutical agent, Targaceutical® compounds may have increased pharmacological activity, reduced toxicity, and improved pharmacokinetic properties.
This exciting new technology has the potential to improve currently available drugs or create new compounds. Taxoprexin ® (DHA-paclitaxel), the first of these new products, is currently undergoing a phase III trial in the United States.
Targaceutical® technology represents a major advancement in drug development and can be applied to a wide range of drug products. Development programs, including products to treat cancer, infectious disease, and mental illness, are currently underway.
Luitpold's Targaceutical® partners are applying our proprietary technology and drug development expertise to their own drugs to optimize/enable new molecular leads and to create improved products from current drugs, extending and expanding franchise lifecycles. To learn more about options to apply Targaceutical® technology to your drug development challenges, please contact us.
With the addition of Targaceutical® technology to its portfolio, Luitpold has expanded its pipeline to include a number of exciting new therapies. This latest addition represents a major step forward for Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and American Regent, Inc.
