Luitpold Animal Health: Care That's More Complete

Non-infectious arthritis and degenerative joint disease (DJD) are significant causes of poor performance and economic loss in athletic horses. In 1984, Luitpold founded its Animal Health division to develop and manufacture a treatment for DJD. The company developed Adequan ® i.a. (Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan), which obtained the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for intra-articular injection in 1984. The efficacy of Adequan® i.a. (Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan) won acclaim and became an asset to the field of veterinary medicine. When Adequan® i.m. (Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan) was introduced in 1989, it offered the benefit of systemic treatment and a route of administration useful to a large group of equine veterinarians.

Arthritis in dogs was identified as an area of great need. Adequan® Canine (Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan) was approved by the FDA in 1997 for use in dogs to control signs of osteoarthritis and is the only drug in the veterinary DJD market to be classified as "disease modifying." In 2004 Novartis was contracted to market Adequan® Canine in the companion animal industry.

Osteoarthritis starts when joint cartilage is compromised as a result of trauma, genetics, or simply from old age. While there are drug treatments that are effective in easing the pain and inflammation of the disease, they do little to actually treat the disease. Adequan ® Canine not only offers relief from pain and inflammation but also targets their source.

Adequan® i.m. and Adequan® i.a. are effective, injectable treatments available to veterinarians for the treatment of equine non-infectious  DJD. The medication works in four ways by:
  • Blocking the damaging enzymes as they form
  • Relieving the pain of inflammation
  • Improving lubrication in the joints
  • Inhibiting degeneration before cartilage damage can continue
For millions of dogs and horses in the United States, Adequan® i.m., Adequan® i.a., and Adequan® Canine have meant the difference between dealing with the pain of osteoarthritis and living a life with their disabling disease under control.
